The attraction of virgin female hide beetles (Dermestes maculatus) to cadavers by a combination of decomposition odour and male sex pheromones

Editor’s summary
Young virgin female hide beetles (Dermestes maculatus) are attracted to cadavers by a combination of cadaver odour and male sex pheromones. This research shows that neither cadaver scent, nor male sex pheromones alone, caught the fancy of the fussy females, ensuring that there is both a waiting male and food for her larvae. Editor’s summary
Mono and bi-gynous mating tactics coexist in Argiope bruennnichi populations, where males make mating decisions based on the size and age of the first female that they mate with, as well as temporal and state-related factors.

Editor’s summary
Male nightingales have smaller song repertoires in their first year than older males, and overlap songs at higher rates as they age. This is suggested to be a communicative strategy to establish relationships with competing males and choosy females.
